No time to blog!

Ugh.. so work has been keeping me busy and I'm working on projects more than ever. We've had a few bad weekends here, the temp jumping up to 100 degrees and now all of a sudden it's 55 and rainy... perfect project weather.

I finished the blanket for little Smush. She's doing well and her surgery is in a week. I've decided to stay here in LA and have them call me every 2 minutes to let me know how everyone is doing. They're under some stress with the whole situation right now and with all the rest of the family interfering, I'd just add to the duress they're under.

So, without further ado... Smush's blanket

I actually went against the directions and crocheted the squares together wrong sides together so that way you got a little texture on the right side at the seams. I like it... and it only took a week to make it.

Also, well I couldn't help myself, I was at Joann's and those little pattern books were calling out to me... So I picked up the cutest little dress/bloomer/hat outfit pattern and Smush will be stylin'!

It's the little one on the right side. I picked a similar fabric for one dress and a cute bug/flower print for the other.

I've never sewed baby clothes before, just adult clothes and quilts and I have to say while I'm sewing this tiny little thing together I have to stop every few seconds and squeal at how adorable and tiny it is. It's much faster to sew as well because it's so small.

I'm also crocheting a blanket for a girl at work. She's having a baby so I'm giving that to her as a gift. No pics just yet, but it'll be done in a day or two so I'll show you then.

Ahhh have a happy long memorial day weekend... enjoy!

Crochet....

You ain't so tough huh?

So recently I received a call from my sister in law letting me know that my neice will be having heart surgery in the first week of June (she has a hole in her heart that has not healed since her birth so they need to close it up). Part of the reason they told me this, other than to worry me to death, is because I have her same blood type.

For surgical reasons the doctor needs two family donors with the same blood type as her just in case they need it during her surgery. The problem.... I'm 2,500 miles away. So after much round and around we've found out that I can donate from California and they will send the blood to Illinois, it's just all about the timing.

So as inspiration for such event, other than the fact that I may make a trip back for the surgery, so I can see her (finally) before... just in case... I'm crocheting her a special surgery blanket. She of course can't wear it during the operation or in the actual OR, but I want my brother and sis-in-law to wrap her in it before and after her surgery.

I'm also conquering that fear of crochet patterns. Which was a feat in and of itself... After 4 long hours I finally got one of these little squares done...

After pulling my head out of my bum, slowing down to really read the pattern, I figured it out and I've now completed the 13 pink squares and I'm now making the 8 varegated squares... only 4 white after that, crochet them all together and I'm shipping it off to the baby.

I'm not keen on blankets, but this is keeping me totally interested, it's moving very fast and it's lightweight so it won't kill me on the hot days.

You still won't ever catch me making these into a vest or other wearable garment... EVER... crochet is for doilies, toilet paper covers and blankets ONLY...

Long time no see...

I know this is probably the longest I've gone without a post in a long time, but lately we've been having a heat wave. This is the first weekend since my birthday that the temperature isn't somewhere in the high 90's.

I know this is Southern California and I know it gets hot, but not usually until August.

So this weekend I'm getting back to my knitting since I know I won't be sweatting all over my piece. I'm still working on the baby sweater and fruit loop socks. I'm so slow.

Also, now I think I have a newly found liking for crochet (thanks Rae). I was talking with my aunt today, who is a quilter/knitter/crocheter/seamstress extrodinaire and who was my main teacher of knitting and quilting as a child, she's helping me to understand crochet patterns much better. They're not written in plain english, or to me they aren't that is, so she's being super helpful (yay!).

I think I'm only going to stick to crocheting simpler things like hats, lacey things, afghans and so on, but it's something different to take away from the knitting hum drum that I think I've fallen into.
